I never put too much weight on the groundhog’s prediction as to whether there would be an early spring or extended winter.  The recent warmer temperatures and tulips popping out of the ground are proof enough to me that spring is almost here. I love everything about spring.  It’s my second favorite season behind fall (I’m sure I’ll touch on that later this year).  It’s the time of year when everyone starts coming out of winter hibernation and once again enjoys the outdoors. Whether it is visits to the parks, a weekend trip to the beach, or just going for a walk around the neighborhood, it’s nice to be outside again without 12 layers of clothes.

Spring is also notorious for cleaning and sprucing things up around your home.  For me, after the holidays are over my home feels a bit cold and sparse.  Come spring time, I’m more than ready for a few new items or simply rearranging my existing accessories for a quick refresh.  Out with the old and in with the new, which brings me to spring decorating and spring cleaning.

When it comes to decorating there are so many options.  From decorating to a specific holiday or for just the spring seasons you can't go wrong.  Both are equally beautiful and fun, it all depends on your personal style and preference.  I typically go for the seasonal décor.  With our recent move to Charlotte we downsized quite a bit.  This forces me to be much more intentional with the items that I choose to buy and bring into our house.  When something catches my eye, I pause and ask myself two questions. Do I truly love it? Can I easily use it in a variety of ways? I love all the colorful decor that comes along with spring but making sure these things coordinate with the bigger picture of my whole house is important.

My number one way to freshen up a space are fresh flowers and plants.  They are an easy and inexpensive way to add color and life to your home. You can easily create a variety of arrangements with endless color combinations.   The vessel you use for the flowers is equally important.  If you want the flowers to be the focal point then go with a simple or understated vessel and vice versa if you have a statement vase or container.

Now, let’s get to the good stuff!  I rounded up a few of my favorite spring décor items if you want to do a little freshening up of your own.

The spring season wouldn't be complete without spring cleaning.  I think this also stems back to the excess of the holidays. The flood of new ‘stuff’ that has found its way into our house sets me off into major purge mode.

Being the control freak that I am, I planned to keep all my daughter’s toys confined to her room.  Of course, we all know what they say about best laid plans.  In true three-year-old fashion toys are constantly being pulled out into every room of the house faster than I thought was humanly possible.  It’s like a tornado comes behind me and undoes my hour of cleaning in about 6 seconds.  She is my constant reminder to let go of things and embrace the mess.  She won’t be this small forever and I’m sure, at some point, I will long for the days of a messy house covered in toys.

Having lots of storage is key to trying to get a handle on the mess that comes with having kids.  My go-to storage solutions are baskets, lots and lots of baskets.  They are easy for kids to throw toys in and great for adults to hide stuff when you learn that unexpected company is dropping by.  If you’re a basket person like me or in need of better storage solutions check out these ideas to jump start your spring cleaning.

Happy (almost) spring everyone!
